With the 2019 ASCP Safety & Compliance Awards now open for entries, it seemed the perfect time to share a story from one of last year’s winners to see what winning an award has meant to them.
Women in Gas Award winner 2018 Charlene Williams, talks about what receiving an award has meant to her…
How did you feel when you were told you had been nominated for the Women in Gas Award?
At first, I was shocked, then excited as I had never been to the AGSM National Conference & Awards before. There was also a great sense of pride and appreciation from my manager who submitted the nomination, I was happy to know that all the hard work that I do had been acknowledged.
How did you find the awards event?
The award ceremony was a great experience – as it was my first time I was not sure what to expect, but I was impressed.
What kind of impact did winning your award have?
Following the award, our marketing & communications team interviewed me for a ‘day in the life’ interview and there was an article posted internally and externally confirming the success at the awards. This did create a tremendous buzz for the team and I have since had a number of people in the organisation I have never spoken to before congratulating me on the achievement.
I believe you attended the Women in Compliance networking lunch at the Conference, how did you find it?
It was great to be amongst women working within the same field as I am the only woman in my team and it was very interesting to discover what others’ challenges were and share advice. I definitely would recommend the group to other women in the sector, I am a strong believer in sharing knowledge and experiences with others. Especially working in a predominately male-lead industry it is easy to go unnoticed and never speak up about any ideas for improved ways of working etc. Therefore, networking groups such as this are good for boosting confidence and morale as well as making connections.
The next National Safety and Compliance Awards 2019 will be held on the evening of the 24th of April and nominations are now open! Get your nomination in before the deadline of the 4th January 2019!
