Electrical Safety First amendments to the Best Practice Guide No 4
Dear AESM / ASCP member,
The AESM are again working with Electrical Safety First to assist in reviewing their Best Practice Guide no. 4, reflecting the recent changes in BS7671, and would welcome your comments on the following amendments.
The comments required relate to omission of SPDs/AFDDs, and mixing of protective devices within the Classification Codes. It has been suggested that the wording to be adopted is as follows:-
Add in Classification Code C3
•Mixed switchgear components (circuit-breakers, RCDs, main switched etc) of different manufacturer (Note: if there are signs of thermal damage, enclosure/assembly has been modified, inadequate installation or different direction of toggles/switches, a Code C2 would be appropriate)
Add in Under ‘Worthy of a note’
•Absence of Surge Protection Device (SPD) (Note: if medical or expensive electrical equipment installed, a Code C3 would apply)
•Absence of Arc Fault Detection Device (AFDD) (Note: for wooden constructed domestic premises e.g. barn conversion, a Code C3 would apply)
Your observations on the above suggested amendments would be very much appreciated and will be included in our feedback to ESF.
The request has also been posted in the AESM and ASCP members forums.
